Beavers sweep San Diego in late game surge

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Dallas Macias’ three-run home run in the bottom of the 8th gave OSU the boost they needed and the Beavs were able to stop a late push made by San Diego to earn a 3-game sweep in their home opener series.

Unlike Saturday’s slow start, both teams got on the board early thanks to a single by Aiva Arquette in the bottom of the 3rd. Travis Reeder added another run in the 4th to increase OSU’s lead to 2-0.

San Diego answered back to make it 2-1 in the 6th, but neither team would score again until one big hit in the bottom of the 8th. Macias hit a three-run home run to give the Beavers a final surge and a 5-1 lead heading into the 9th.

However, San Diego didn’t go down quietly. They filled the bases with only 1 out, and Oregon State pitcher Laif Palmer came out of the bullpen to strike out the next batter. He walked in a run, making the score 5-2, before striking out the final batter and securing the win.

Interestingly, Oregon State used six pitchers throughout this game, a plan that certainly worked in their favor as they kept San Diego to only 2 runs. Over the 3-game series, the Toreros scored only 5 runs and the Beavers brought home18.

Oregon State will be back at it on Tuesday when they take on Washington State in Corvallis. Watch it live on Portland’s CW, the KOIN+ app or on KOIN.com. First pitch is slated for 5:35 p.m. PT and tickets are available by visiting BeaverTickets.com.
