The rally in Chicago was among several across the country. A group called ‘Stand Up for Science’ scheduled the events to defend science as a public good and a pillar of social, political and economic progress, with the main rally being held in Washington, D.C.
“We need to stand together for medical research,” Sen. Dick Durbin told those gathered. “If you want a great nation, you don’t eliminate research, whether it’s medical research, agriculture research, across the board. Research looks into the future and gives us hope. We need to stand together.
‘Stand Up for Science’ calls for ending censorship and political interference in science, securing and expanding scientific funding, and defending and diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility in science.
Friday’s rally in Washington was at the Lincoln Memorial, in the shadow of a statue of the president who created the National Academy of Sciences in 1863.
