Police: Rockford felon found with gun in backpack and cannabis

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford Police arrested Quataris Chears, 37, for allegedly having a firearm in his backpack.

On March 5, around 10 a.m., officers were called to the 900 block of Halsted Road after a parole officer found a handgun. Authorities also found cannabis in his residence.

Chears told police he had the weapon for his protection.

The suspect was convicted of two counts of criminal sexual abuse involving minors in 2008.

Chears is charged with possession of a firearm without a FOID card, felon possession of a weapon, and possession of cannabis.
