According to the Office of District Attorney Collin Sims, the case stemmed from the fall of 2021, when the victim sent a note to her school guidance counselor about “inappropriate stuff at home.”
In a meeting with the counselor, the child said she had been sexually assaulted by 43-year-old Damien White. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office was then contacted and opened an investigation into the matter.
In an interview with the victim, it was discovered that sexual abuse occurred on multiple occasions several months prior. On two separate nights, White reportedly entered the child’s room and touched her inappropriately. On another night, he reportedly entered her room and raped her, telling the victim several times not to tell anybody.
The victim testified to the court regarding the abuse, however the defendant reportedly denied sexually assaulting the victim, with his defense claiming that the accusations were made up by the girl’s mother as revenge for White ending their relationship.
After four hours of deliberating, a jury found White guilty of first-degree rape of a child under the age of 13, and two counts of sexual battery of a child under the age of 13. He is being held in jail pending sentencing on March 31.
First-degree rape holds a mandatory sentence of life in prison, with the other two charges each carrying a sentence of 25 to 99 years in prison.
