Butler (20-8) will face Union County (26-5) for the Georgia High School Association Class-AA state championship at 3 p.m. in Macon. The Bulldogs will be playing for their first state championship in boys basketball since 1966.
Denmark-Olar will face Abbeville for the South Carolina High School League Class-A championship at 4 p.m. in Florence. The Vikings (19-5) are Lower State champions for the first time since 2006 and are seeking their first state title since 1991.
“This has been 35 years in the making,” said head coach Hercules Davis. “The guys now really want it, they want it for themselves and they want it for the town and they’re just hungry for it.”
“It feels great, knowing that our girls, they did it three years in a row,” said Christian Nimmons, one of ten seniors on the team. “Now that we finally got a chance, I pray and hope we make it back home to Denmark.”
On Friday, the North Augusta boys and girls will play for state championships in Florence, while the Washington-Wilkes girls will do the same in Macon.
