Fresno Police officers honored with Medal of Valor

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Fresno Police Department held its Major Commendations and Awards Ceremony Wednesday morning.

Personnel were recognized in various categories including recovered firearms, exceptional performance, and lifesaving awards.

Three officers and one sergeant received the department’s highest honor: the Medal of Valor Award. The award is given to members of the department who display extreme courage while facing danger.

Sgt. George Imirian and Officer Christian Andrade, Jacob Shubin and Johnathan Yang were all awarded the Medal of Valor.

They were recognized for an incident that happened back on Oct. 26 in the areas of 8th and Platt streets in Fresno where a man, later identified as 40-year-old Andy Morales, shot and killed his then roommate, 43-year-old Mario Ternora.

Morales then returned to the scene and opened fire on Imirian as he sat in his patrol vehicle.

Imirian was hit multiple times in the ambush but was able to radio for help and return fire.

The officers provided aid to Imirian while also returning fire to the suspect.

Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto says Morales’ behavior shows he intended to hurt the sergeant.

“Not only was he firing rounds at him, but he was also repositioning himself multiple times, going to the ground, standing up, finding places of cover and concealment to prevent himself from being struck by gunfire,” Casto said back in October.

Officers shot Morales seven times, killing him.

Imirian was shot multiple times in the legs and stayed in the hospital for a few days following the incident.
