The poodle, named Molly, escaped from her owner’s home on Aster Lane at 11 a.m., police said. Molly was eventually spotted by responding police officers, but she managed to evade them before heading to the riverbank near River Drive and Kipp Avenue, according to authorities.
The dog jumped into the frigid waters of the Passaic River and swam toward Clifton around 5:15 p.m., police said. She made it onto a small island in Dundee Lake, according to authorities.
Multiple agencies, including Garfield PD, Garfield Fire Department, Clifton PD and Clifton Fire Department all responded to the scene. A Clifton firefighter was able to locate Molly, who was cold but unharmed, on the island around 6:40 p.m., police said.
The dog was later reunited with her owner in Garfield, according to authorities.
