The IRS Service Center in Ogden, the St. George Federal Building, and the Wallace F. Bennett Federal Building in Salt Lake were deemed “non-core” properties by the GSA’s Public Building Service.
“Decades of funding deficiencies have resulted in many of these buildings becoming functionally obsolete and unsuitable for use by our federal workforce,” the GSA explained in a statement on March 4.
The GSA said buildings that have been deemed “not core to government operations” are mostly used for office space. It has said most of the spaces it manages in Utah are office spaces, with the IRS and Forest Service being the primary tenants.
On the national level, more than 400 properties have been listed to be closed or sold, including the FBI headquarters and the main Department of Justice building, the Associated Press reports.
The GSA explained that the non-core assets make up almost 80 million rentable square feet and are worth more than $8.3 billion in “recapitalization needs.” The buildings in Utah total more than 830,000 square feet, according to the GSA.
Overall, the GSA says it manages more than 360 million square feet of rentable space and more than $110 billion in products and services. The GSA said it is working to “ensure taxpayers no longer pay for empty and underutilized federal office space” or the associated maintenance costs for those buildings.
“GSA’s mission is to enhance government efficiency and service delivery to the American people,” it explains.
The designations come as part of President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk’s efforts to decrease government spending and the size of the federal government. Canceled office leases have been listed on the website for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
