Rockford alderwoman charged with domestic battery

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Rockford’s 7th Ward Alderman Janessa Wilkins (D) faces charges of domestic battery after allegedly hitting a minor child multiple times with a belt as punishment for stealing.

According to Rockford Police, officers were called for a report of domestic violence that had occurred in a home in the 600 block of Chisholm Trail around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26th.

Court records showed that a teen reported being struck more than 30 times with a leather belt.

Wilkins told officers that the minor stole money, resulting in the punishment.

According to the charging documents, the teen suffered injuries to her left arm and legs.

The Department of Children and Family Services took protective custody of the teen, and Wilkins now faces charges of domestic battery causing bodily harm.
