THIBODAUX, La. (WNTZ) – Northwestern State women’s tennis continued its strong start in Southland Conference play with a commanding 6-1 victory over Nicholls on Monday at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

The Lady Demons (2-5, 2-0) extended their dominance over the Colonels (2-4, 0-2), showcasing consistency in both singles and doubles play.

“The team is feeling well,” head coach Marcos Morelli said. “The girls have been working very hard. They trusted that to be successful, they needed to be more consistent in singles.”

Northwestern State set the tone early by securing the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Pika Doberlet and Tjasa Klevisar defeated Nicholls’ Aada Inna and Paulia Villegas 6-3. Zoi Spyrou and Sofi Garcia clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3 over Julia Bordignon and Amalie Grube Andersen.

Carrying the momentum into singles play, the Lady Demons secured five of six matches.

Spyrou battled through a marathon match at the No. 1 spot, overcoming Inna in a grueling 5-7, 7-5, 15-13 contest. Klevisar followed with an impressive comeback at No. 2, edging Villegas 3-6, 7-6 (2), 11-9.

Maria Farina dominated her match at No. 3, defeating Noemie Piquet 6-2, 6-2, while Ayu Ishibashi showcased control in a 6-3, 6-1 win over Blanca Losada at No. 5. Garcia capped the Lady Demons’ singles success with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 6 over Constanza Cruz.

Nicholls’ lone point came at No. 4 singles, where Bordignon topped Doberlet 6-1, 6-0.

“The girls are looking forward to the next matches at home,” Morelli said. “We must continue building on these wins and use them for momentum.”

Northwestern State returns to action Saturday, hosting Southland Conference newcomer UTRGV at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex in Natchitoches to begin a three-match homestand.
