The Cabinet for Health and Family Services announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service approved D-SNAP on Monday.
Applications will be accepted from March 5 through March 12.
“Team Kentucky appreciates the federal emergency funding provided to aid Kentuckians whose homes and properties have been impacted or destroyed by this historic storm,” Eric Friedlander, secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services said. “It’s comforting to know that storm victims can access these crucial benefits. Despite the fact that not all grocery stores may be operational due to storm damage, an increasing number are reopening and ready to assist.”
D-SNAP offers short-term assistance for individuals and families who have received a federal disaster declaration. Anyone living or working in Breathitt, Clay, Estill, Floyd, Harlan, Johnson, Knott, Lee, Letcher, Martin, Owsley, Perry, Pike or Simpson counties can apply.
Anyone in those areas who already receives SNAP can also request replacement benefits due to power outages or other impacts.
People receiving SNAP or D-SNAP benefits in approved counties can buy hot, prepared food at authorized retailers with their benefits until March 27.
If you have experienced any of the following you may qualify for D-SNAP:
- Home or business repairs
- Temporary shelter expenses
- Evacuation or relocation expenses
- Home or business protection
- Disaster-related personal injury, including funeral expenses
- Lost or no access to income due to the disaster, including reduced, terminated or delayed receipt of income, for a large part of the benefit period
- In some cases, food loss after a disaster like flooding or power outages
