Court docs: Indy man had .299% BAC when he ramped Nissan off railroad tracks and crashed into powerlines

INDIANAPOLIS — Court documents reveal that an Indianapolis man had a blood alcohol content of .299% when he fled from cops at 70 miles per hour and ramped off a railroad crossing — his vehicle bursting into flames after impact.

Bradley Patrick, 39, was officially charged on Sunday with one count of resisting law enforcement, a Level 6 felony, and two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to court documents, the crash occurred on Southport Road on Jan. 26, 2024. An officer clocked Patrick’s Nissan driving 40 mph in a posted 20 mph zone on Anniston Drive.

The officer pursued Patrick who sped away at an increasing speed, according to police. At one point during the chase, Patrick reached speeds of 70 mph in a 25 mph zone.

Court documents reveal that Patrick didn’t slow down when he hit a railroad track crossing at 2300 E. Southport Road. Patrick’s Nissan was launched completely airborne with the pursuing officer noticing a shower of blue sparks emitting from powerlines on the south side of the road.

Investigators learned Patrick’s vehicle came crashing down after being launched off the railroad track crossing. The Nissan tumbled and rolled, striking a power pole and a shelter house belonging to a church. Patrick’s Nissan was on fire when police found his crunched up vehicle. The first officer on scene couldn’t exit his vehicle to assist, however, due to a downed powerline wrapping around the police cruiser.

Two additional Southport police officers arrived on scene and helped the injured Patrick from his crashed Nissan. Patrick had a broken arm, a broken leg and lacerations to his head.

A blood draw would end up revealing Patrick had a .299% blood alcohol content on the night of the crash. This is on the verge of alcohol poisoning, which experts say can afflict people with a blood alcohol content of greater than .3% and be potentially life-threatening.

In Indiana, a Level 6 felony carries a maximum prison sentence of two and a half years.
