SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — A road in the Sugar House neighborhood was shut down on Monday afternoon after a gas leak. After nearly an hour, officials said the gas leak was shut off.
According to Captain Chad Jepperson with the Salt Lake City Fire Department, the leak was caused by construction in the area, and the gas was leaking from a steel line on 2100 South near 700 East.
The fire department has asked people to avoid the area, and two businesses — one of which lost its gas supply — have been evacuated. Other businesses in the area have been ordered to shelter in place.
Jepperson said the incident first occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Monday, and the gas was leaking outside and not going into buildings. The two businesses were evacuated because their gas supplies were affected, but not because gas was leaking into the buildings.
ABC4.com has a crew heading to the scene to learn more about the situation.
