Around midnight, Lafayette fire officials responded to a house fire on the 100 block of South Orange Street. Officials said when they arrived on scene, heavy smoke was coming from the wood-framed residence, and the residence had sustained heavy fire damage.
Officials entered the residence to discover the fire in the kitchen area. They searched the dwelling and found a man and a woman in a bedroom. They were immediately taken to a local hospital.
Officials said the man, 44-year-old Ronald J. Williams, passed away from his injuries. The 52-year-old woman remains in the hospital in critical condition. The occupants’ dog also died in the fire.
Fire officials determined the fire originated in the kitchen. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
