Krewe of Iris & Tucks parades leave paradegoers fulfilled

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — As Mardi Gras inches closer, dozens of parades are rolling ahead of the big day.

“We got the biggest party and the best party right here,” said Ann van Lamsweerde.

It was an Uptown doubleheader as the Krewe of Iris, followed by the Krewe of Tucks kicked off a a day of fun for paradegoers from all over. Beads, Sunglasses and toilet paper were the highlight of the day.

For Tim Hearin, Mardi Gras is a season filled with joy, happiness and community.

“There’s nothing like it. Nobody outside of New Orleans knows how truly special, unique and marvelous the season is. It’s about community. It’s about joy. It’s about just enjoying life, as short as it is, and as beautiful as it is,” said Hearin.

Celebrating its 108th year as a club, the Krewe of Iris continues to be a fan favorite for its reusable throws and signature sunglasses.

Lamsweerde came out to support the ladies, reminiscing about her times riding as well.

“I’ve ridden in Iris before and it’s a beautiful experience, but the ladies all look so beautiful, and they’ve got their sunglasses and they’re all ready to go. It’s a wonderful time. And the weather couldn’t be better”, said Lamsweerde.

The Krewe of Tucks brought some potty humor, rolling in the parade on motorized toilet scooters. It’s something that received great laughs from paradegoers.

One paradegoer says he was on the hunt to get his favorite person something special from the krewe.

“I really want a plunger from Tucks, because my mom’s actually walking in Tucks and she doesn’t get to see it. So I’m going to try to get I’m sure I’m going to try to get a plunger for her,” said Sullivan.

As the day continued many were thankful for the police presence that filled the crowd, adding there’s nothing like Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

“This city has put together a great police presence and it makes you feel safe being out here. Hospitality with everyone. Everyone’s enjoying everybody’s company. It’s what Mardi Gras is all about,” said John Morngrue.
