“You don’t expect it, and you’re not a member of Rex hoping to be king, but when they ask you, it’s a very humbling moment because you think about all of the other worthy members of our organization who are out in the community doing wonderful things,” said 2025’s King of Carnival Edward Howard Crosby.
Those were the words of a very modest Crosby, upon learning he would reign as this year’s King of Carnival. Crosby is a real estate attorney, but he’s spent significant time in service to our city, from a spell on the New Orleans City Council to countless boards, including the early years of the Louisiana Children’s Museum.
“It was hand to mouth. We were down on Julia Street and we were trying to get those exhibits, so it’s very heartwarming for me to see what has happened with the Children’s Museum in the last 30 years. It’s a fabulous facility out in City Park,” said Crosby.
Crosby was also instrumental in helping our city develop the farmers’ markets we all enjoy. He credits growing up on a farm in Mississippi to his love of fresh food and says it’s essential for healthy families. He even has his own chicken coop at home for fresh eggs.
“I have seven hens and we get fresh eggs. I don’t recommend it if you’re doing it for the price of eggs. I think I’ve got the price down to about $56 an egg. You do it for the love of the chickens and eggs; you don’t do it for the savings,” said Crosby.
Crosby is also a family man, as he and his wife, Katy, have two sons and a daughter, and he even builds custom dollhouses for some of his seven grandchildren. He honors his wife and cherishes the royal journey with her.
“She’s a wonderful mother and grandmother; she’s the love of my life. We’ve been together 40 years, and this is an experience that we both share, and I’m excited about having her with me throughout the whole thing,” said Crosby.
Rex 2025 left us with a message for all of his Mardi Gras subjects.
“Stay safe, be kind to those around you, and never, ever cease to love,” said Crosby.
