Utah senators react to contentious Oval Office meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Utah’s senators are responding to a contentious interaction between President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Friday with contrasting public statements.

Sen. Mike Lee was the first Utah senator to respond to the meeting between presidents, thanking Trump and Vice President Vance for “standing up for OUR COUNTRY and putting America first.”

However, Sen. John Curtis took a different approach. He said he is “hopeful that our countries can get back to the table and advance the prospects of a just and lasting peace.”

“Diplomacy and statesmanship seem to have been checked at the door of the Oval Office today. Ukraine is an ally in pursuit of free markets, free speech, and free people—Western values that align with our own. A win for Putin, on the other hand, does not,” his statement

reads.

According to the Associated Press, Trump and Vance met with Zelenskyy in the Oval Office in a meeting streamed by media outlets live. The meeting became contentious, and Zelenskyy ultimately left the White House without signing a crucial minerals deal with the United States.

During the last 10 minutes of the meeting, Trump and Zelenskyy were speaking over each other, arguing about the war with Russia.

At one point, Vance said, “I think it’s disrespectful for you to come to the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media.”

When Vance suggested they discuss these disagreements in private instead of trying to “fight it out in the American media,” Trump jumped in saying he thinks “it’s good for the American people to see what’s going on.”

Trump claimed Zelenskyy was “gambling with World War II” and Vance repeatedly questioned whether Zelenskyy had thanked them for assisting Ukraine in the war. Zelenskyy tried to address their claims, but Trump stopped him saying, “You’ve done a lot of talking.”

“You’re not acting at all thankful and that’s not a nice thing,” Trump said at the end of the meeting. “This is going to be great television.”
