KEARNS, Utah (ABC4) — A Kearns Junior High School student was killed in an auto-pedestrian crash while biking across a crosswalk near the school Thursday morning, according to the Unified Police Department.

At approximately 7:45 a.m., police said Adam Mahamat, 12, entered a crosswalk near Kearns Junior High on 4140 West when he was struck by a Chevy Tahoe driving eastbound on Sams Boulevard.

First responders arrived on scene and began performing life-saving measures on the 12-year-old. He was then transported to a local hospital in critical condition where he died from his injuries.

Granite School District provided a statement on the incident saying “The school is heartbroken.”

“Kearns Jr High is an incredibly close-knit community and this accident has had far-reaching effects,” the statement read.

The district said its Crisis Response Team is at the school providing support to students and staff and will be on campus again tomorrow “to work with families for any additional ongoing support or resources that may be needed.”

Mayor Kelly Bush told ABC4 that there are crossing guards for 4000 West and Sams Boulevard and the other streets have devices to facilitate safe crossing. This particular intersection has a raised median and crossing signs that flash once the button is pushed by a pedestrian.

“This horrible tragedy continues to be under investigation. As always we will work with our local law enforcement and accident reconstruction team to identify any necessary improvements. Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this tragedy,” Bush said.

Police said the driver is cooperating with authorities and the investigation is ongoing. Both police and school officials are urging drivers and pedestrians to be especially cautious near school zones and crosswalks.

“Students – please pay attention when you’re crossing the street and look both ways before crossing. Drivers, please be extra vigilant when you’re driving in or around school zones, especially before and after school,” Granite School District said.
