Southern University mourns loss of beloved football coach Sean Wallace

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) —The Southern University community came together to bid a heartfelt farewell to longtime coach Sean Wallace, a man whose dedication to shaping young athletes extended far beyond the game.

Friends, family, and former players gathered inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center to celebrate a life defined by mentorship, strength, and unwavering commitment.

Wallace’s son, Abraham, spoke of his father’s resilience and devotion.

“He was the strongest man I’ve ever known, a fighter in every sense. He gave everything he had—his heart, his soul, and his love to those around him. And in the end, he fought harder than anyone should ever have to,” he shared.

For over a decade, Wallace led the Jaguars with both discipline and compassion, leaving a lasting impression on those he coached. Former Dunham athlete Tony Huey reflected on Wallace’s guidance.

“Thank you, Coach, for demonstrating honor, integrity, and character—telling us the quiet truths about ourselves and recognizing our strengths and abilities even when we did not see them within ourselves,” Huey said.

Wallace’s impact reached beyond the field. His former teammate, Terry Samuels, recalled his determination and belief in others.

“All things are possible to him that believes. And Sean would make you believe. Sean was probably the most passionate, determined, strong-willed person I’ve ever met in my life,” Samuels said.

As the choir’s solemn melodies filled the air, loved ones found solace in the memories of Wallace’s wisdom and leadership. Southern University Chancellor John K. Pierre honored his contributions to the university.

“When I think of Sean Strong, I also think of Southern Strong because he did so many things for this university. He represented us well,” Pierre said.

Though Coach Wallace is gone, his legacy remains embedded in the hearts of those he inspired. His family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support, finding comfort in knowing that his spirit will forever be a part of Southern University.
