UMMC became a tenant with the Jackson Medical Mall in 2010, and their leasing contract will expire in 2030. The hospital will move more than 80% of its operations at the mall to its Jackson campus and a new facility in Madison County.
“There will be some changes for everybody. I’m sure the folks who are moving to the other places with them will have to adapt also. And so, our community will have to adapt somewhere because some of them are going to go to the new places with UMMC,” said Primus Wheeler, executive director of the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation.
With more than 350,000 square feet of space soon to be empty, the foundation said it has high hopes for a new chapter. They’re vowing to remain a top-tier healthcare destination for Jacksonians.
“The main thing is that this place was created to take care of the underserved. And unserved, we’re still in that business. And the doors are open. We’re not closing. And if they want to want to keep coming here, we’re going to take care of them in the same style we always have,” said Wheeler.
Patients will start to see UMMC moving out of the space as early as May.
