The City of Greensburg confirmed that Sky Bird Manor, which is located at 302 E. 10th Street, caught on fire Thursday afternoon after a gas leak occurred underneath the building.
When authorities arrived on the scene, they immediately evacuated all of the residents and staff as the building’s gas and electric were shut off. No injuries were reported, the City of Greensburg said.
The Greensburg Police Department and Decatur County EMS also assisted at the scene.
The Decatur County Emergency Management Agency established a warming center for displaced residents at First Christian Church with assistance from the American Red Cross. The church is located at 425 N. Broadway Street. Some of the displaced are staying with relatives while others are remaining at the shelter, the City of Greensburg said.
Nate Stoermer, the Greensburg Fire Department chief, told FOX59/CBS4 that residents have spent the last two days collecting medications and other necessities as the building will be closed for the time being.
The City of Greensburg urged citizens to avoid the area as contractors will be on site to replace the burned electrical wiring. Stoermer added that additional inspections will need to take place before residents can be allowed to return to the building.
“Sky Bird Manor will remain closed for the foreseeable future, and site and regional management for Sky Bird Manor will work on the relocation of the residents that have been displaced due to the fire,” the City of Greensburg said.
The City of Greensburg urged any residents who may be in need to contact (765) 570-3529.
