According to the United States Department of Justice, 23-year-old Vernell Woodard and three other co-defendants sold methamphetamine to the undercover ATF agent at a Westbank apartment complex on Aug. 29, 2023. Following the transaction, arrangements were made for a second deal on the following day.
On Aug. 30, the agent returned to the complex. Upon walking in, they were robbed at gunpoint by 51-year-old Michael Lott and 30-year-old Dianta Tropez. Agents who monitored the deal began responding to the situation, prompting the defendants to flee.
While trying to escape by climbing down from the third-floor balcony, the ATF agent reportedly fell, resulting in serious injuries and paralysis.
Woodard, Lott and Tropez, along with three others were indicted in the case on Sept. 28, 2023.
A judge sentenced Woodard to 209 months in prison, Lott to 300 months in prison and Tropez to 284 months in prison. Additionally, they were all placed on a 5-year supervised release after their prison terms conclude.
