NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — “Grease Y’a Later Alligator” was the theme of the 2025 Greasing of the Poles at the Royal Sonesta Friday, Feb. 28.

The 55th annual event kicked off the weekend heading into Mardi Gras.

The crowd was filled with locals and tourists oblivious to the spectacle that was about to take place in the famous Bourbon Street.

The morning started with the soundtrack of the city from the Hurricane Brass Band and the musical styling of the King of Bounce Ha-Sizzle who was also a contestant, with Robin Barnes who served as the emcee.

The other competitive greasers included:

  • Lauren Haydel: Fleurty Girl
  • Chelsea Brasted: Journalist
  • Evelyn Bories (Evie Eats): Social Media Influencer

The winners of years past, including WGNO’s Scott Pilié, Buku Triece, and Trixie Minx, took to the stage to toss some Mardi Gras cups and alligator beads to the crowd of spectators.

After a welcome from General Manager of the Royal Sonesta David Bilbe, the greasing began with the contestants up on their ladders smearing, sliding and greasing the green poles of the historic hotel with Vaseline.

The crowd’s cheering grew as Ha-Sizzle used his tail while Evelyn dashed some hot sauce in the mix. Bu what took the greasy cake was Lauren in true Fleurty Girl fashion adding her green boa to the pole ultimately winning her the big bottle of bubbly.

“This is the biggest girls dream of a lifetime, grew up in New Orleans, to be asked is an honor itself, but to win this is crazy.”
