“I was convinced it wasn’t going to happen to be completely honest,” Rembisz said. “I was more worried about how I was going to respond when runners got on… I was (thinking) it’s going to end. Perfect games don’t happen. I was just happy I was balling out.”
Rembisz becomes just one of 37 pitchers in NCAA Division I history to notch a perfect game, and one of just 22 to do it in a full nine inning game. Rembisz’s perfect game is the first in NCAA DI history since Maryland’s Ryan Ramsey did so against Northwestern on April 29, 2022.
According to Portland’s manager Geoff Loomis, starting catcher Tyler Howard and Rembisz himself, the game couldn’t have been any more different than planned if the Pilots had tried.
The game was initially slated to be played in Seattle, but rain had made Seattle’s park unusable and was moved to Portland on short notice. As for the game plan, Rembisz was coached to pitch to contact and work his fastball, slider and changeup to generate ground balls. Five or six innings was the expectation for Rembisz, before passing the ball to some younger arms in the bullpen.
