Leesville High student, 14, arrested for handgun possession

LEESVILLE, La. (WNTZ) — A 14-year-old student was taken into custody Thursday afternoon after being found in possession of a handgun at Leesville High School, authorities said.

According to the Leesville Police Department (LPD), officers were contacted by school officials at approximately 2:50 p.m. regarding a student who was discovered with a firearm on campus. LPD officers and Vernon Parish Sheriff’s deputies responded to the school, where an initial investigation confirmed that the student had concealed the handgun in the waistband of his pants.

Authorities said there were no reports of threats made with the weapon, and no injuries were reported.

The juvenile was arrested and charged with:

  • Carrying of a firearm by a student on school property (LA R.S. 14:95.2)
  • Illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile (LA R.S. 14:95.8)

The student remains in custody.

The Leesville Police Department said it will continue to work alongside Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office and local schools to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff.
