Chimp Haven is the world’s largest chimpanzee sanctuary, and the new arrivals mark a new chapter for the former research chimps, who will now live in large social groups.
The chimps, ages 38 to 54, were transported to Chimp Haven by a veterinarian team who gave them fleece-lined blankets and other items to help them cope with the transition.
Faylene, Olivia, Kamaka, JD, Tillina, Pearl, Sherril, BC, Al, and Nickel arrived at the 200-acre sanctuary designed for former research chimps.
Work is currently underway on an expansion at the sanctuary that will help accommodate the chimps, and generous supporters have donated more than $5.5 million to the cause.
Rana Smith is the President and CEO of Chimp Haven. She said the milestone marks the beginning of a long-anticipated journey as the chimpanzees transition to life at Chimp Haven. They will be given care, companionship, and the freedom to explore natural habitats.
“Our team is honored to provide these incredible individuals with what we call the Chimp Life– where every day is designed for them to thrive,” said Smith.
More retirees from the Alamogordo Primate Facility will arrive this spring.
2025 is Chimp Haven’s 30th anniversary.
