Mayor Wilson calls for immediate action in plan to combat homelessness

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland Mayor Keith Wilson addressed members of the Multnomah County Board on Thursday morning, laying out his plan to address homelessness in the city.

He called for prioritizing nighttime emergency shelters and deploying a network of day centers to assess the needs of those who are using the services.

Wilson also called for immediate action on the issue, citing a graph showing the number of recorded deaths of homeless people that have occurred over the past few years via the annual Domicile Unknown report. The graph shows a 477% increase in deaths from 2017 to 2023.

“We cannot look at this chart and think in terms of three-year or five-year or 10-year plans any longer. We must think in terms of what we can do right here, right now,” Wilson said.

The mayor’s plan comes one day after Multnomah County and the City of Portland met and discussed a $100 million homeless services budget deficit in the county.
