Man wounded in Loves Park officer-involved shooting

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WTVO) – A man is in critical condition after being shot by members of the Loves Park Police Department Wednesday night.

A news release states that just before 11 p.m., officers responded to the 500 block of River Lane and learned a man with a rifle walked way from the residence.

The officers initiated a search of the area and located the suspect near the 600 block of Sheridan Drive. Police say the man was holding a long rifle and threatening to harm himself.

Officers attempted to deescalate the situation through conversation, but the man pointed the rifle at them, prompting officers to discharge their service weapons, the news release said.

The suspect was struck and immediately transported to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery. No officers were injured.

It is not known how many shots were fired or how many officers discharged their weapons.

The Winnebago/Boone Integrity Task Force is investigating.
