Man accused of stealing truck from courthouse parking lot; victim was working in DMV building

POCATELLO — A 39-year-old man was arrested after police say he stole another man’s truck while the victim was busy fixing the DMV building.

Dillon Boehme is charged with one count of felony grand theft.

On Feb. 13, a Pocatello Police officer received a report of a stolen Green 1997 Ford F250 from the Bannock County Courthouse parking lot.

The truck owner said he was doing attic work on the DMV building all day and had gone to run errands a few times. Around 11 a.m., the victim parked for the last time in the center row of the south parking lot near the alley.

When he realized his truck was not parked where he left it, he called Custom Towing, as that company had marked the parking lot with unauthorized tow signs.

The company said it had not picked up his truck, so he called the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office, which also said it hadn’t towed it.

The officer entered the truck into the National Crime Information Center as a stolen vehicle and obtained surveillance video of the parking lot from the Bannock County Courthouse. Court documents say police were given a CD from the court marshals that was labeled “Dillon Boehme.”

In the report, police said they had “previous engagements with (Boehme) and confidently identified the male in the screenshots from the video as him.”

In the video, Boehme appears to walk past the stolen truck, then returns to it before circling around it to look in the windows.

At 12:20 p.m., Boehme allegedly looked around the parking lot before getting in the truck and driving east on Center Street.

Officers drove multiple times by Boehme’s last known address and could not find the truck. Police say they believed they had the correct address, as there had been “recent animal problem investigations at that residence involving (Boehme).”

On Saturday, officers got a report that Boehme was standing in the middle of the road near a home on South 13th Avenue. Police responded, and Boehme was arrested. Reports do not say if Boehme had the truck with him.

Court documents say Boehme has a “history of failing to appear,” that he is a “multi-state offender with convictions in Idaho and Arizona,” and that he “has a significant misdemeanor record’ with a “withheld judgment on a prior felony DUI.”

Boehme was booked into the Bannock County Jail on a $5,000 bond. He is expected to appear for a preliminary hearing on March 5.

If convicted, he could face up to 14 years in prison.

Though Boehme has been charged with these crimes, it does not necessarily mean he committed them. Everyone is presumed innocent until they are proven guilty.
