Juan LaFonta, Anthony Mackie surprise New Orleans students at movie screening

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — It was a rare treat for students from three New Orleans schools. A trip to the movies with a surprise from a big star.

“It’s really a great opportunity to be recognized by older people and the great things we do in school, and the city like a community and people that support you,” said I’sani Martin.

That recognition Martin referenced was a day at the movies for students from Carver, Sophie B. Wright and Mary McLeod Bethune Charter, a treat from attorney Juan LaFonta.

“There are a lot of kids that are honor students that work with other kids that are doing special programs. So, this is our way of rewarding them and the community to let them know that it’s important the work you’re doing and salute them,” said LaFonta.

The students enjoyed free popcorn and drinks, and on the big screen was the number one movie in the country, “Captain America: Brave New World” starring LaFonta’s childhood friend Anthony Mackie, and he was the big surprise in person.

“You’ll always hear, ‘You cannot do it.’ But the important thing is this: use that as fuel, instead of a reason to quit,” said Mackie.

Mackie spoke at length with the students about perseverance and believing in themselves.

“A lot of people just think you wake up and everything just happens. But there’s a lot of shortcomings, there’s a lot of failures, there’s a lot of hurt and joys on that journey and I think you have to share that with people,” said Mackie.

Lots of smiles and appreciation from the students.

“It was a welcoming experience, and I want to thank y’all for having us do that today,” said Leonard Wilson.

The star also paid tribute to the educators who helped shape him.

“Before my career, I had a great teacher every step of the way, and every time one teacher let me off, another teacher picked me up,” said Mackie.
