INDIANAPOLIS — A 40-year-old man was arrested early Thursday morning on several weapons and drug-related offenses on the near northwest side of Indianapolis.

According to a post on social media from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Arthur Haynes III was taken into custody on preliminary charges of:

  • Unlawful carrying of handgun with a prior felony conviction
  • Possession of heroin with the intent to deal
  • Dealing in heroin over 12 grams
  • Possession of a narcotic drug with a previous conviction.

At around 2 a.m. on Thursday, officers with IMPD’s northwest district were patrolling the 1400 block of Waterway Blvd. because of recent break-ins at a nearby apartment complex under construction.

While they were patrolling, officers reportedly saw an SUV stopped on the side of the road. The post read that as officers approached, they saw a man, later identified as Haynes, sleeping in the drivers seat with what officers believed to be illegal narcotics in the vehicle’s center console.

When officers woke Haynes up, he reportedly refused to leave the vehicle and “began moving and reaching around inside the SUV.” The post read that officers were eventually able to get the driver’s door open and pulled Haynes out of the car.

The post read that Haynes was placed in handcuffs. A firearm was reportedly observed where Haynes had been sitting. After the gun was found, police searched the rest of the vehicle. Officers reportedly found the following items:

  • Around 62 grams of suspected heroin, packaged in several different bags
  • Around 35 grams of pressed pills
  • Around 140 grams of suspected marijuana, packaged and labeled in different bags
  • Around 24 grams of suspected mushrooms, packaged in several small bags
  • An electronic scale
  • Clear, empty pill capsules

The post read that the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision for Haynes.
