Strange situation: Car fire leads to man’s arrest in Fairmount Park

PHILADELPHIA (WPHL) — A man was arrested after a series of dramatic events including stealing a car and assaulting witnesses and firefighters Tuesday morning in the Fairmount Park area of Philadelphia.

Philadelphia police said it all began with a Toyota sedan crashing into a tree and bursting into flames. A witness saw a man standing near the crash fire and walked over to him to ask if he needed assistance. The witness said the man appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance. When the witness said he offered the man a bottle of water, the man attempted to attack him. The witnesses recorded cell phone video showing the man chasing him back to his vehicle. The witness drove away a short distance but remained in the area and watched another individual offer their help. Police said, again, the man attacked the second individual. The first witnesses intervened, spraying pepper spray into the man’s face. Police said the man then stole the second witness’s BMW.

About two to three minutes later, police said the man drove back to the area of the crash site and attempted to run over both witnesses, ultimately crashing the BMW into a ravine nearby.

By then, Fire Engine 16 with the Philadelphia Fire Department was on the scene extinguishing the flames engulfing the Toyota crashed into the tree, but police said the man injected himself between the fire and the water spraying from the hose. He began assaulting the firefighters, swinging fallen tree branches at the firefighters.

Officers then deployed a taser at the suspect finally bringing him down. They apprehended the man and took him to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident, including those resulting from pepper spray and the electronic control weapon.

According to the preliminary assessment by the fire marshal, the fire originated from the initial collision between the Toyota and the tree.

The man is in the custody of Philadelphia police.
