Outbound Kennedy Expressway cleaned up after steel poles fall on roadway due to semi hitting Lake St. bridge

CHICAGO — Traffic was slowed on the outbound Kennedy Expressway near Lake Street early Wednesday morning as crews worked to remove steel poles from the shoulder following a crash involving a semitruck late Tuesday night.

Clean-up was complete just before 7 a.m. Wednesday. Skycam 9 reported some residual delays and slow traffic as 7 a.m. approached.

According to Illinois State Police, a Peterbilt semi carrying steel poles hit the Lake Street bridge around 11 p.m. Tuesday, causing some of the poles to fall onto I-90. Two cars then hit the poles on the expressway, ISP says, and two people were subsequently taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The expressway was closed until the poles could be moved to the shoulder. It reopened just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to ISP.

Drivers were urged to proceed slowly and use caution in the area until the steel poles were removed from the shoulder.
