The Grizzlies first took the field as the “Fresno Tacos” in 2015, becoming the first team in Minor League Baseball to temporarily rebrand under a different name. The identity change quickly became a sensation, sparking the food-themed alter ego trend across the league.
The Fresno Grizzlies say this year’s redesign is a tribute to the taco truck culture that inspired the original transformation. The concept of playing as the “Fresno Tacos” was born from the team’s annual Taco Truck Throwdown, a festival celebrating the Central Valley’s deep connection to taco trucks.
According to the Grizzlies, taco trucks have a rich history in the region, dating back to the 1942 Bracero Act, which created a need to feed laborers working in the fields during World War II.
“Playing as the Fresno Tacos has always been about the Taco Truck,” President of the Fresno Grizzlies Derek Franks said. “Paying tribute to the hardworking men and women who run these small businesses is the cornerstone of our ‘Tacos’ alter ego, and we feel this year’s rebrand brings the attention back to them.”
The new “Fresno Tacos” uniform will make its on-field debut on May 30 at Chukchansi Park during the team’s annual Fresno Tacos Night.
While the full line of new “Fresno Tacos” merchandise will not be available until closer to the season opener, fans can preorder a limited-edition bundle featuring the redesigned Fresno Tacos hat and a ticket to Fresno Tacos Night.
The exclusive preorder is available starting Tuesday at TacosBaseball.com or at the Chukchansi Park Ticket Office. Only 100 bundles are available, so fans looking to get their hands on the new cap are encouraged to act fast.
