Where to watch (almost) every contender for the 2025 Oscars

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — It’s Oscars week and there’s never been a better time to catch up on those best pictures nominees you may have missed.

ABC4 film critic and awards season correspondent Patrick Beatty broke down where to watch all the feature-length awards contenders. Here’s the list in alphabetic order of what’s available on streaming platforms and video on demand (VOD).

Available on VOD and to stream on Hulu with a subscription.

This sequel to the Ridley Scott classic horror film showcases incredible visual effects and space imagery. Not only is it a compelling story that has no right to be as good as it is, but it also has one of the most terrifying moments of 2024 film.

Anora (6 Oscar Nominations)

Available on rent or purchase on VOD.

Mikey Madson plays an exotic dancer who falls in love with a Russian oligarch’s son, who goes missing leading her and his “handlers” on a wild chase to find him. This film has won multiple awards including Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards, and most recently Mikey won Best Actress at this year’s BAFTA’s. “Anora” has been nominated for six Oscar categories including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress.

The Apprentice (2 Oscar Nominations)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD.

Sebastian Stan is nominated for Best Actor, while Jeremy Strong is nominated for Best Supporting Actor. “The Apprentice” is a film depicting the rise of real-estate mogul Donald Trump, both Stan and Strong have been praised for their performances.

Better Man (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD.

A music biopic of the life of Robbie Williams told through his perspective as a chimpanzee. The visual effects work and technical strides made to capture the performance is innovative and stunning at times. The film itself while underperforming at the box office has a large critical praise as one of the best musicals of 2024.

Black Box Diaries (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available via Showtime Friday 02/28.

In the best documentary category, “Black Box Diaries” features Journalist Shiori Ito as she investigates her own sexual assault looking for justice. In her pursuit, the investigation begins to unravel and expose the dated Japan legal system.

The Brutalist (10 Oscar Nominations)

Available to purchase on VOD.

Costing just 10 million to make, “The Brutalist” focuses on a brilliant architect László Tóth (Adrien Brody) as he and his wife flee post-war Europe in 1947 to make a new life in the United States. Their journey reached a mysterious wealthy client (Guy Pierce) whose grand vision László sets out to create.

The film is nominated for multiple categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best actor and Best Supporting Actor.

A Complete Unknown (8 Oscar Nominations)

Available in limited Utah theaters and to purchase on VOD.

Fresh off a SAG AFTRA best actor win, “A Complete Unknown” tells the story of Bob Dylan (Timothèe Chalamet) from his rise in the folk music world to his genre-bending controversies. Directed by James Mangold and co-starring Edward Norton and Monica Barbaro, the film is nominated in performance and technical categories including Best Actor, Best Picture, Best Actress, and Costume Design.

A Real Pain (2 Oscar Nominations)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD or stream on Disney+ and Hulu with a subscription.

Written, directed, and starring Jesse Eisenberg as he and his brash, sometimes frustrating, cousin (Kieren Culkin) take a tour through Poland where their Jewish Grandmother was raised, as well as the harsh truths of Poland during WWII. Culkin has been the frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor, and the film is nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Conclave (8 Oscar Nominations)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD, or stream on Peacock with subscription.

“Conclave” is nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Adapted Screenplay, and more. Starring Ralph Fiennes as Cardinal Lawrence, the film centers around the selection of a new pope and the surprising political process of cardinals campaigning for the support of their fellow Cardinals. The election unravels into a mystery that could shake the very foundation of the church.

Dune Pt. 2 (5 Oscar Nominations)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD or stream on MAX and Netflix with a subscription.

In the second part of the 2021 film “Dune Pt. 1,” we return to the resource-rich planet of Arrakis as Paul Atraedes (Timothèe Chalamet) seeks to become one with the native Freman and put an end to the destructive rule of the Harkonens. It is nominated for Best Picture, as well as a handful of technical categories such as Best Sound, Film Editing, and Visual Effects.

Emilia Pérez (13 Oscar Nominations)

Only available on Netflix with a subscription.

This musical drama follows an infamous Mexican cartel leader Manitas (Karla Sofía Gascón) who enlists a lawyer (Zoe Saldaña) to help her and her family disappear as she transitions into a woman. Selena Gomez plays her estranged wife, as Manitas (now Emilia), re-enters her life to be with their children.

The film has fallen under much controversy with the unearthed tweets posted by Karla Sofía Gascón, as well as its director’s comments on the Spanish language. However, Zoe Saldaña has swept every award show for Best Supporting Actress, making this the most likely win for the Oscars. The film is among the film’s most nominations in Academy history, with only “Titanic,” “La La Land,” and “All About Eve” beating it with 14 nominations.

Flow (2 Oscar Nominations)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD or stream on MAX with a subscription.

Up for both an animated and international film nomination, “Flow” is a beautiful animated film that follows a cat in a post-human world, as it fends for its life as water levels continue to rise across the globe.

The Girl with the Needle (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD, or stream on MUBI with a subscription.

Set in 1919, a young woman begins working as a wet nurse at an adoption agency for disadvantaged mothers but becomes suspicious of the woman who runs the organization. It is nominated for Best International Feature.

Gladiator II (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD or stream on Paramount+ with a subscription.

Up only one nomination in Costume Design, “Gladiator II” follows Lucius Maximus as he sets out for revenge on his fallen wife, and enters into the world of gladiators run by Denzel Washington. The sequel to the original Ridley Scott classic

I’m Still Here (3 Oscar Nominations)

Available theatrically, not available digitally yet.

Fernanda Torres stars Eunice Paiva, a mother and activist navigating the disappearance of her husband. Set during the military dictatorship in Brazil, Fernanda Torres has been widely acclaimed for her performance and she is nominated for Best Actress, along with the film being nominated for Best Picture.

Inside Out 2 (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD or stream on Disney+ with a subscription.

The sequel to the widely successful “Inside Out” and the highest-grossing film of 2024, “Inside Out 2” sees the return of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear as Riley enters into a new phase of her life. The film is nominated for Best Animated Feature.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD, or stream on Hulu with a subscription.

Taking place hundreds of years after Ceasar, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” ushers in a new trilogy of storytelling in the Apes universe with compelling story and incredible visual effects work. It is nominated for Best Visual Effects.

Maria (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available on Netflix with a subscription.

Starring Angelina Jolie as famous Opera singer Maria Callus in the last 7 days of her life, as she reflects on her career and journey. It is the third film in director Pablo Larraín’s trilogy of important 20th-century women, alongside “Jackie,” and “Spencer.” The film is nominated for Best Cinematography.

Memoir of a Snail (1 Oscar Nomination)

Streaming on AMC+ with a subscription.

Nominated for Best Animated Feature, “Memoir of a Snail” follows the life of lonely misfit Grace Pudel, from childhood to adulthood. It is loosely based on the life of Writer/Director Adam Elliot and is an adult stop-motion animated film.

Nickel Boys (2 Oscar Nominations)

Available to purchase on VOD or stream on MGM+ on February 28th with a subscription.

Directed by RaMell Ross, “Nickel Boys” is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel centered around two fictional boys and their time at a reform school, based on the Dozier Academy in Florida. This unique film experience was shot in a first-person point of view and is being celebrated for its screenplay and unique cinematography. It’s nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

No Other Land (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available in limited Utah theaters.

Nominated for Best Documentary Feature, “No Other Land” follows four Palestinian-Israeli activists during the still ongoing conflict in the region.

Nosferatu (4 Oscar Nominations)

Available to purchase on VOD or stream on Peacock with a subscription.

Directed by Robert Eggers, “Nosferatu” is the reimagining of the classic Dracula-inspired film about the terrifying Count Orlok. The gothic and beautifully haunting cinematography, as well as costume design, production design, and makeup and hairstyling, are all up for nominations this year.

Porcelain War (1 Oscar Nomination)

Unavailable in Utah.

The only film on the list that is not available in Utah, “Porcelain War” is up for Best Documentary. The film follows a group of Ukrainian artists as they are entrenched in the war with Russia.

The Seed of the Sacred Fig (1 Nomination)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD.

The film centers around Iman, a judge living in Tehran, who becomes paranoid due to nationwide political protests of the death of a young woman. The thing increasing his paranoia is that someone close to him may have caused the murder. It is nominated for Best International Feature.

September 5 (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD.

“September 5” is a historical drama thriller film that follows the ABC Sports News Team during the Munich Massacre of the 1972 Summer Olympics. This is a gripping drama that shows the chaos, but integrity, of broadcast journalism as it’s put through unimaginable situations. The film is nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Sing Sing (3 Oscar Nominations)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD and to stream on March 21st on MAX with a subscription.

Based on the real-life “Rehabilitation Through the Arts” program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison, the film centers on a group of incarcerated men putting on a musical they’ve created themselves. Starring Colman Domingo, the film is a beautiful, entertaining, and inspiring story of creativity and perseverance, and whose cast includes many real-life formerly incarcerated men who were themselves alumni of the program. “Sing Sing” is nominated for Best Actor, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Song.

Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD.

Directed by Johan Grimonprez, this documentary covers the Cold War episode that brought American musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach to the UN Security Council in protest against the murder of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba. It is nominated for Best Documentary Feature.

The Substance (5 Oscar Nominations)

A rising contender for multiple categories, “The Substance” stars Demi Moore as a fading actress who discovers a mysterious drug that creates a younger version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley) but has horrible consequences if not taken properly. This body-horror film has incredible practical effects and a career-best performance by Demi Moore. Not for the faint of heart, “The Substance” is nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Makeup & Hairstyling, and Original Screenplay.

Sugarcane (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available on Disney+ and Hulu with a subscription.

“Sugarcane” follows an investigation into an Indian residential school for reports of historic abuses and missing and dead children. The film takes a look into the lives of this small community as they deal with tremendous pain. It is nominated for Best Documentary Feature.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengence Most Fowl (1 Oscar Nomination)

Available on Netflix with a subscription.

Wallace and Gromit return in a new stop-motion film. The movie is nominated for Best Animated Feature.

Wicked (10 Oscar Nominations)

Available to purchase on VOD or purchase physical media. Available to stream starting March 21st on Peacock with a subscription.

Based on the hit Broadway show and bestselling novel, “Wicked” tells the history of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), and the Good Witch, Galinda (Arianna Grande), as their paths intertwine at a school for magic. This musical is joyous, heartfelt, and one of the biggest crowd-pleasers of 2024.

It is nominated for the following ten awards: Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Score, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

The Wild Robot (3 Oscar Nominations)

Available to rent or purchase on VOD or stream on Peacock with a subscription.

“The Wild Robot” is based on the bestselling novel about a shipwrecked Robot who after finding and caring for a lost baby goose. It is nominated for Best Animated Feature, Best Sound, and Best Original Score. The Utah Film Critics Association recently awarded the film Best Picture during their annual film awards.
