The truck struck the bridge at approximately 11:33 a.m. and was wedged in place from the force of the crash. Photos of the scene show the trailer mangled by the impact.
Marion County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jeremy Schwab told KOIN 6 News that these crashes are a common occurrence.
“We typically receive a few calls each week related to either crashes or large trucks backing up, which creates a hazard,” Schwab said.
Drivers are cited in response to any traffic laws that may be broken when vehicles crash into the bridge, Schwab said. Signs are posted in the area warning divers of the low clearance.
“Adhering to roadway rules and signage is crucial, as there are multiple signs warning drivers of the low-clearance bridge,” he said. “When such incidents occur, the road must be closed entirely until the bridge can be inspected. Additionally, our Public Works team assists with closing the roadway, which impacts traffic flow.”
