Federal prisoner in Illinois gets additional 9 years for brutal beating of fellow inmate

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A federal inmate has been sentenced to an additional 9 years in prison for brutally beating another inmate while he was in custody.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Julian Breal, 47, was convicted of assault causing serious bodily injury last year after he repeatedly kicked and punched another inmate in the Federal Correctional Institution in Thomson, in 2022.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment which included surgery, authorities said.

He appeared before U.S. District Judge Iain Johnston in Rockford on Tuesday for his sentencing, which will be served consecutively to the sentence he is currently serving.
