Bus carrying IU Indy men’s basketball team catches fire after road game against Northern Kentucky

KENT, Ind. — A bus carrying the Indiana University Indianapolis men’s basketball team caught fire on Sunday.

Per a post from IU Indy Athletics on X, the men’s basketball team was on its way back from a road game against Northern Kentucky when the fire started. The team was in Kent, Indiana, when the blaze first broke out.

IU Indy reported that all members of the men’s basketball team and staff evacuated from the bus safely. Another bus had to be called to the scene to pick the team up and bring it back to Indianapolis.

“On the return drive from today’s game against Northern Kentucky, the bus carrying the IU Indianapolis men’s basketball team experienced a mechanical issue that caused a fire around Kent, Indiana,” IU Indy Athletics administrators wrote in a prepared statement. “All members of the team and staff evacuated the bus without injury. Another bus is en route to pick up the team and deliver them back to Indianapolis.”

Prior to the fire, the Jaguars had fallen, 71-67, to the NKU Norse in Highland, Kentucky. The IU Indy men’s basketball team will play again on Thursday, when it hosts Robert Morris in Indianapolis.
