Suspected drunk driver faces charges after woman struck and killed in South Philadelphia

A woman is dead after police said she was struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while standing on the sidewalk on Saturday in South Philadelphia.

On Sunday, the community and the family of 64-year-old Vone Sananikhom gathered to honor her life outside her home on the 2300 block of South 7th Street in South Philadelphia, according to Action News at 10.

Family and friends cooked together, prayed, and lit candles in memory of the mother of three.

“It’s like shattered, my whole world is,” said Shella Sitthirath, Sananikhom’s daughter. “That was my mom, but it’s okay. We’re here. We’ll get through it.”

It was just feet away from her home that Sananikhom was tragically hit by a black Ford F150 truck on Saturday night.

Police said the truck reversed onto the sidewalk, just after 7 p.m., while Sananikhom was standing at the bus stop on the 2400 block of Ritner Street, according to police.

According to Action News at 10, Philadelphia police said the 59-year-old driver first hit a parked SUV before hitting Sananikhom at a high rate of speed.

Sananikhom was taken to Methodist Hospital where she died just after 7:30 p.m.

Her daughter is still adjusting to life without her.

“I love her so much, and I’ve always appreciated everything she does for me,” Sitthirath said. “You only have one mom. She does so much. So, everyone just make sure you love your mom and hug your moms,” she added.

Police said the driver was taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries. Then, he was arrested and charged with a DUI, according to Action News at 10.
