ABBEVILLE, La. (
KLFY) — A Vermilion Parish house of worship is celebrating 130 years of existence.
Mount Triumph Baptist Church in Abbeville marked its 130th anniversary Sunday with a service filled with prayer, song and remembrance. Rev. Willie Williams Jr. said Mount Triumph holds true to its name with a history of perseverance.
“We were founded in 1895,” Williams said. “In the late 1920’s, the church was burned after a lightning strike.”
After going through two rebuilds, the current church was built in 1972. Mount Triumph’s mission is to serve its congregation with a variety of ministries.
“We now have services for those who are dealing with grief, those who are dealing with addiction, as well as other social services,” Williams said.
Williams thanks God for all the church has done and will continue to do, and said the church is looking forward to 130 more successful years.
“The church has been here and will be here,” he said. “It’s just like when we serve God. God does not leave us. We leave God, but when we come to ourselves, we begin to realize God never went anywhere.”
