Madison County urges residents to be prepared for possible flooding as temperatures rise

The following is a news release from the Madison County Emergency Management team.

REXBURG – Madison County Emergency Management encourages our citizens to prepare for the warm weather coming next week. According to the National Weather Service, we can see temperatures in the 40s beginning on Monday. The National Weather Service released an advisory Friday notifying Southeast Idaho of the possibility of flooding from melting snow as our temperatures increase.

Madison County maintains a stockpile of sandbags that are used for emergency response. Residents may call 911 if a home or structure is actively flooding, to access the sandbags. Robert Kohler, the Madison County Emergency Manager, encourages citizens to take steps now to prepare for melt water run-off.

“Our county has sand available for residents to fill sandbags in preparation for any flooding. Citizens can purchase their own sandbags and we will provide the sand,” Kohler says.

Sandbags are available at many local stores throughout the valley. Call Madison Fire Department at (208) 359-3010 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to arrange for a time to fill your sandbags.

We also encourage other preparatory steps, such as clearing snow away from foundations and clearing any drains, in an effort to prevent water pools from forming near structures. Any steps you can take to prepare yourself and your property will help lessen the impact of any melt water.
