Local organizations to 'pack the court' at hearing of Melissa Jubane's accused killer
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Several local organizations geared toward uplifting the Filipino community are calling on the public to join them at an upcoming court hearing of Bryce Schubert.

Nonprofit Gabriela Portland – a human rights organization aimed towards uplifting women from the Philippines – has been spearheading these events ever since Schubert, 27, was accused in the murder of Beaverton nurse Melissa Jubane and arrested

in September 2024.

After just getting married days before, Jubane was first reported missing when she missed her shift as a nurse at Providence St. Vincent Hospital. She was found dead two days later, according to police.

Officials said Schubert had lived in the same apartment complex as Jubane at the time of her disappearance and death.

In the course of their search for Jubane, Schubert was quickly linked to her death by authorities and taken into custody. However, court documents related to the ongoing investigation are still sealed.

Currently, Schubert is facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse, He plead not guilty on all counts. He is expected to stand trial beginning Sept. 9, 2025.

Members of Gabriela Portland – as well as others including Bayan Oregon and Malaya Portland – previously gathered outside the courthouse at Schubert’s hearings in October and November 2024, holding signs demanding justice for Jubane.

“Concerned community members vow to attend every hearing until Melissa’s family gets justice and to bring attention to the vile act of violence against women all over the world,” the group said in a social media post.

The advocates are set to pack the Washington County Courthouse at 1:30 p.m. before the hearing starts at 2:30 p.m.
