Allen Chapel Church celebrates its founder

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A Rockford church celebrated its founding father, Richard Allen, on Saturday.

If not for Allen and his contributions, the church would not exist, church members explained.

The celebration recognizes not only Allen but the birth of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The event also focused on the community, worshiping in story, music and poetry.

Allen Chapel’s lead pastor believes this celebration is an opportunity to better humanity.

“We can forge our way to make this place a better place for everybody to live [for] humanity and to care and love each other,” said Dr. John Halbert.

Dr. Halbert said his church takes a moment to reflect on the congregation’s past and the ability to move forward during Black History Month.
