Man arrested after shooting on Near West Side

CHICAGO — A man is in custody after he allegedly stole a security guard’s gun and opened fire on the city’s Near West Side on Saturday morning.

According to Chicago police, the incident unfolded just after 9 a.m. in a building in the 1300 block of South Racine Avenue.

Officers said it all began after the suspect, a 23-year-old man, allegedly refused to leave the building.

A security guard, who was working at the location, attempted to escort the suspect off the premises, but officers said that was when a fight broke out between the two men.

During the fight, officers said the suspect allegedly hit the security guard in the face and managed to get ahold of his gun. He then allegedly fired a shot from the gun but did not hit anyone.

Following the fight, officers said the victim fled for safety and contacted the police.

Officers and members of the CPD SWAT Team responded to the scene and cleared the building before taking the suspect into custody.

Authorities have not yet identified the man involved and charges against him are pending.

Officers said an investigation is currently underway.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact CPD Area Three Detectives at 312-744-8263 or dial 911.
