NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY) — Family and friends of Shentell Brown gathered Friday to celebrate the life she lived as both a loving person and a role model to many.

“Shentell loved everybody,” said her mother, Velma Lee Walker. “She was a loving person. Anything she could do for anybody. She was there to help them.”

Brown was laid to rest after funeral services Friday at the Highland Baptist Church in New Iberia.

Brown was shot and killed Feb. 9 by her husband, Kevin Brown, who later turned the gun on himself. As assistant district attorney with the 16th Judicial District Court, Shentell worked in the juvenile non-support division helping children stay away from a life of crime.

Walker said she is proud of her daughter and the impact she left on everyone she met.

“She was somebody out there really looking out for everybody’s children,” Walker said. “It didn’t matter who you were. She’d just surround the community and it’s just a blessing, a joy from God to see what joy she brought to everybody in this world.”

Friends and family showed up in purple, Shentell’s favorite color. According to her daughters Kayla and Victoria Brown, the color became synonymous with their mother. Victoria and Kayla both say they take the way their mother lived her life and aspire to be like her as they keep her memory alive.

“Seeing all these people come together, I didn’t even know how much she impacted everybody,” Victoria said. “It just moves me to follow in her footsteps.”

“It’s such an honor to be her daughter, and it’s a big shoe to fill,” Kayla said. “I hope to be as impactful and as amazing as she was.”
