The Prestonsburg Police Department (PPD) posted on Facebook that on Thursday, officers had been dispatched to the Paintsville Walmart in response to a shoplifting complaint.
It was discovered at the scene that the emergency dispatcher, Rebecca Fletcher, of Paintsville, had allegedly stolen $250 from a Prestonsburg Walmart. Someone had also stolen or tried to steal $1,000 of merchandise from the Paintsville store, according to a news release.
According to a news release, warrants for Fletcher’s arrest were signed and filed in both Johnson and Floyd County district courts.
Prestonsburg and Painstville Police Department officers arrested Fletcher at her home once the warrants had been issued. She was lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center.
“Fletcher has been suspended without pay and her security clearance permanently revoked pending the completion of administrative proceedings,” the PPD wrote on Facebook.
Law enforcement officials said public servants should be held accountable for breaking the public trust, and that “behavior of this type” wouldn’t be tolerated by city employees.
The theft investigation remains ongoing and has been turned over to the Floyd and Johnson County Attorneys.
