“I think this president has done a good job in scaring a lot of people. Particularly federal employees. Just a lot things he is saying is just not how you run a democracy. You may do it in a dictatorship. But this is a democracy and we don’t elect kings. We elect a president who is accountable to the people. We have three branches of government and he is one. He has one branch, I’m another, and have we judges. All of us are equal. I think the sooner the president understands that the better off we will all be,” said Rep. Fields (D) District 6.
During the packed town hall, Representative Fields spoke openly about his thoughts on President Donald Trump’s executive orders and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, known as Doge.
“The country is in complete chaos and confusion. People don’t understand how one man can have so much power, and the truth of the matter, according to the constitution, he does not. Most of the president’s orders I’m absolutely against because I think many of them infringes upon the powers of the legislature. All of these executive orders will not go into effect because many of them are being challenged in the courts. I do understand this one man by the name of Elon Musk going into departments and taken their personal and private information. I think that is unconscionable and unconstitutional. But we got to continue to fight,” Rep. Fields said.
His thoughts on the state of the Democratic party and its House Minority leader.
“I feel very good about it. I think Hakeem Jeffries is a strong leader. He’s doing very well with guiding the democratic party and, in particular, with members of Congress. I think he’s doing a yeoman’s job,” Rep. Fields said.
He spoke about the president’s shift away from relations with Ukraine in support of Russia.
“Ukraine is our ally. I understand the president has met with Mr. Putin. If he is serious about bringing an end to this war, we all want an end to this war. But you can’t exclude one party that is indispensable, and that’s Ukraine. At the end of the day, Ukraine did not start the war. Russia started the war. Bullies like Putin, you know the way you deal with bullies is that you stand up to them. I think Ukraine stood up to him. I think America needs to continue to stand on the side of Ukraine because if we allow him do it this time he will continue and there will be no end to it. And I like to stand up to bullies,” Fields said.
Along with his relationship with House Speaker Mike Johnson.
“My mom would tell me that if you get two people who agree on everything, one of them is not needed. We have different views obviously, but we are very good friends, and we worked together. That’s what it’s going to take to move this country forward. I think the people will start looking toward the Congress to lead because there’s an absence from the executive branch,” Fields said.
Congressman Fields says he wants to continue holding town halls in Shreveport as frequently as possible. He heads back to Washington next week.
