President Donald Trump announced Shapiro’s appointment to the bipartisan council alongside nine other governors.
“Governor Shapiro was invited by President Trump to serve on the bipartisan Council of Governors — and he looks forward to this opportunity to represent Pennsylvania and collaborate with leaders in both parties on key security and emergency response issues,” a spokesperson for Shapiro’s office said in a statement. “At NGA, the Governor will be focused on promoting Pennsylvania and engaging with leaders from across the country to create opportunity for our Commonwealth.”
The White House says the council is “tasked with strengthening state-federal partnerships on key national security, disaster response, and military coordination issues.”

The White House added that the council “serves as a key forum for governors and federal officials to enhance collaboration on disaster response, National Guard operations, and military integration within the states.”
The Council of Governors was established by the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 and formally created in 2010.
