Suspects at large after teenager was shot in Sandy Park

SANDY, Utah (ABC4) — A teenager has been hospitalized after being shot in Sandy early Thursday evening.

According to the Unified Police Department (UPD), police responded to a report of shots fired around 5 p.m. in the area of Big Bear Park in Sandy. When police arrived on scene, they found shell casing indicating a shooting.

Witnesses said that they had seen two vehicles leaving the area at a high rate of speed. After 20 minutes, police were called to a local hospital where a 17-year-old had arrived for a gunshot wound.

UPD reported to ABC4.com that the victim was shot in an “extremity” and that their condition was non-life threatening.

The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing and details are limited, how UPD told ABC4.com that they believe the shooting is gang-related, and that UPD is working with other police agencies to identify the suspects.

At this time, UPD believes this was an isolated incident, and that there is no on-going threat to the public. Anyone with information is asked to call dispatch at 801-840-4000.

This is a developing story. ABC4 will update this post as new information becomes available.
