Northern Utah snow showers continue through early Thursday evening

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Happy Thursday, Utah! It’s been a snowy day around the northern half of Utah.

Rain changed to snow before sunrise this morning, leading to a messy morning commute. Our storm system is still sending in waves of snow across the area this afternoon, which will eventually begin to fade as we move into the evening hours.

Areas of Davis and Weber Counties have seen the most snow, along with the Tooele Valley. Five to eight inches have been common totals, with snow still occurring this afternoon.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Wasatch Front, Cache Valley, and the central mountains through 5 p.m. Thursday, with advisories for the Uintas being extended through 11 p.m. tonight for lingering snow showers. The Winter Storm Warning for Davis & Weber Counties will continue through 5 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Tonight, the snow exits the Beehive state, and we see temperatures drop into the 20s. Due to the wetness of the snow along with the cold temperatures, you will want to be aware of the risk for black ice to develop for your early Friday morning start.

Friday will feature clearing skies as temperatures will remain on the chilly side across northern Utah. High temperatures will likely only warm into the upper 30s to near 40 for northern Utah, and near 60° for southern Utah.  A breezy northwest wind will also accompany the cool temperatures.

Our weekend is looking fantastic across the region with high pressure settling in over the area. We’re looking at partly sunny skies expected with highs warming through the 40s for northern Utah, and mid to upper 60s for southern Utah.

As the ridge settles closer to the Beehive state, look for mostly dry and warming weather to expand through the state. High temperatures by the beginning of next week will warm into the mid-50s for northern Utah, and climb into the low to mid-70s for southern Utah! These temperatures will be about 10-15° above average across southwest Utah.

The latest model data continues to try and bring in a few “ridge rider” weak systems to produce some light precipitation for the northern mountains, but for now, looks like high pressure will keep most of the storminess to our north and northwest. Looks like this pattern may show signs of breaking down the ridge by the beginning of March but that’s pretty far out in the future for now.

We’ll keep you posted on the latest developments in our 4Warn Weather forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah!
